5 Habits to Transform Your Day

How you spend your day shapes your life, so the onus is on us to be particular about what we do as we go about our day.  The good news is adding these 5 simple habits can make a world of difference. Curious to find out what they are? Keep reading…

Forget the idea of aiming for 10,000 steps; instead, strive for at least 7,000! Recent research has linked 7,000 steps with significant improvements in health outcomes. If walking them all at once is not possible, break them down into smaller “exercise snacks” throughout the day. Get creative with how you add those steps! For example, if you are working from home, consider walking during phone calls or in our case building steps to the fridge and back. Or, if you are using public transport, try getting off one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way home.

Get up early!

You do not need to wake up at 5 a.m.; find your ideal time, at least an hour before you need to start your morning routine. We are normally very sleepy at 5 am, but 6 am is our sweet spot!  It is just early enough to help us glide quietly into the day as discussed in Robin Shama’s book ‘The 5am Club’.  In it, Robin encourages you to reserve the quietest time of the day for exercise, self-renewal and personal growth. We spend it stretching, reading and drinking coffee.  No digital distractions, just peace.

Add some nutritious food to your plate! Did you know that our brains consume 20% of our energy? That energy comes from what you eat.  So, what you eat and drink influences how you feel, think, and behave. So, this year, commit to eating right to support your brain health.

We understand that overhauling your entire diet can feel overwhelming. Instead, consider making smaller changes. Add a food that you currently do not eat or increase your intake of something healthy you already consume. How about trying nuts, olives, dark leafy greens, fatty fish, legumes of any kind, or whole grains?  Jazz up your eating routine by just adding one new thing.  No need to change everything.

Read a chapter a day. Make it a goal to read a chapter a day whether it is that new book, an article you meant to read 3 Sundays ago, or an email from your friend you have been meaning to reply to.  Find time each day to read a chapter consistently.  Use an app to tackle those classics, or go old school and pick up an actual book.

Get dressed! Yes, we know you get dressed every day, but we are talking about really dressing up!  If you find choosing an outfit easy thanks to your superior organisational skills, great! But if you are a bit less organised, then figure out your ‘everyday’ tried-and-tested uniform and make sure it is clean and ready to wear.

Start with a single piece like a skirt, pair of jeans or trousers as the foundation and build around it.  Add tops, coats, shoes and accessories that complement your base piece.  You could stick to a tonal look or add colours that match. See some examples below of variations of a theme around a blue shirt. Dressing in variations of the same outfit daily can make getting ready effortless. So, get dressed, we mean properly dressed to feel like you have your ‘shit’ together and rock that positive mindset.

Now that you have got your 5 daily habits, it is time for action. Remember, start small, stay committed, and watch your days (and life!) transform, one habit at a time.
