Book Review: Lost Lambs
Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash is a genuinely laugh-out-loud novel that, for a time, distracts from the quiet unravelling of the Flynn family, each member unsure how or even where to begin repairing the damage. The wider town offers little reassurance: hardly a community of model citizens. Its main employer wields more than its share of questionable influence, religion takes centre stage for some residents, and even the gnats seem to fight relentlessly for their right to exist and occupy space.
The story explores lost innocence, misguided advice from those scarcely wiser, and the hazy influence of drugs, alcohol, and misinformation on the three daughters. At the centre are parents just as adrift as their children, uncertain how to inhabit the lives they have built. The matriarch mourns the fading of her beauty and seeks reassurance through the prospect of an affair, only to discover that the grass is rarely greener. She finds herself eclipsed not by someone more glamorous or youthful but by someone more genuine, self-aware, and relatable. Bud Flynn, meanwhile, clings on unwilling to embrace an open relationship, yet equally unable to halt the slow erosion of their marriage. Faced with the temptation to seek validation elsewhere, he finds his resolve repeatedly tested.
It is a quietly incisive reflection of what happens when reality, routine, and responsibility inevitably overtake the glow of post-wedding romance. With witty children, bewildered parents, and the constraints of small-town life, the result is a series of chaotic and often hilarious consequences.
Madeline Cash’s debut is the perfect holiday read: engaging, sharply observed, and utterly absorbing. Expect page-turning momentum… and perhaps a missed meal or two.
