I’m not sure about you, but I am tired of trying to create a capsule wardrobe. I urge you to forget about this concept completely. Those are strong words, indeed! Let’s be honest: if you have lived for any time on this precious earth, then you no doubt have gathered some outfits that, frankly, you are never going to part with.
Are you going to say goodbye to the now seriously vintage collection of rock band t-shirts? Are you ready to get rid of that one dress or three that has seen way too many events but that you can comfortably dance the conga in? Whatever the back story, you will keep these items forever. Why should you go all minimalist with only a few items when, if you are anything like us, you have spent a lifetime building your wardrobe?
I suggest that you take the long-term approach to building a wardrobe instead of focusing on the capsule wardrobe. Get excited about building a wardrobe rather than focusing on the number of items. The focus should be on presenting yourself to the world in a way that brings you joy.
As a start, get fully conversant with your outfit budget, and whichever end of the spectrum you lie on, there will be a quality-based choice available. Consider the question of lifestyle. What’s yours? Do you spend most days in an office and go out occasionally or vice versa? Whatever your answer, enjoy shopping to find the right outfits to suit your lifestyle.
Embrace everything that suits you – layering, pattern, colour, lush materials. It is not the number of items that matters but that the wardrobe is well-considered and individualistic.
Think about fit. Does it fit your body shape? Be ready to mend your clothes, e.g., replacing buttons. A good tailor is priceless and can help improve fit.
Don’t ignore trends. It is good to be in the know. Remember, you are always free to skip a trend if it does not suit you. If it does suit you, why not look for interesting ways to add it to your wardrobe? In some cases, perhaps just adding a scarf will do. It could also be that, like most trends these days, it has been here before. You probably have it in your wardrobe already anyway, so extract it from storage, voila… ready to wear
Think creatively about where to find the items. Vintage shopping has become de rigueur for a reason. If all else fails, buy new if you are that smitten, or, in some cases, rent it!

The individual-led wardrobe offers you the freedom to experiment, a way to reflect your mood, interpret an occasion, and just be fully you! Say goodbye to shopping for a capsule wardrobe and embrace the joy of building a long-term wardrobe…
