You are Not your Job!

In a culture that asks, “What do you do?” as a substitute for “Who are you?”, it is easy to confuse what you do for work with your identity. Jobs have become shorthand for worth and productivity, a measure of character. Over time, we have quietly absorbed the dangerous belief that you are your job.

But you are not.

It is easy to see how we got here.  Our jobs dominate a significant portion of our lives; what we earn pays the bills and provides structure, purpose, and social validation. It is also often the quickest way to explain who you are to others. We get praised, promoted, and given a title at work, which we think communicates to the rest of the world that we matter and quickly becomes the lens through which we measure our value.

Psychologists call this work-role centrality, describing how central work is to our identity. When work-role centrality is high, a job is the primary source of self-definition and worth. It is not a bad thing; work can be an important part of an overall life. It is only when you blur the lines between a job and your whole life that it becomes a concern. The costs can be high emotionally, mentally, and physically.

If you take any negative feedback at work personally, or if taking a break from work fills you with guilt and anxiety, or if the thought of losing your job is deeply distressing, then it is essential to step back and ask yourself if you are blurring the lines. Do not let a job disappear along with your sense of self.

Your mission, if you choose to accept this, is to reduce over-reliance on work as an identity so you can be resilient in times of change. We suggest five steps to regain your sense of self.

01

Treat performance outcomes as information, not a verdict.

Develop a clear roadmap for your business with our expert strategic planning services.

02

Invest in your other identities.

Strengthen your identities outside of work. Relationships, hobbies, and community involvement all create stability.

03

Create clear ‘end of day’ rituals around the workday.

Establish set transitions at the start and end of your workday to prevent work from intruding into your personal life.

04

Broaden the definition of success .

Seek validation through movement, learning, creativity, and connections beyond work. Did you learn something new, show up for your elderly parents or protect your peace today?

05

Take your vacation without feeling like you need to earn it.

Recognise your right to recharge without feeling the need to justify your time away from work. Find validation in rest and renewal.

Work does matter; ambition can still exist, but your identity is not dependent on a single role. Regaining your sense of self away from work means letting work be part of, not the whole of, your life. Go ahead, care about your work, take pride in it, but remember: it is something you do, not who you are.
