Book Review: Uprising
A note before you dive in: this book deals directly with sexual slavery and trafficking. It is unflinching, but never gratuitous.
Uprising by Tahmima Anam left me hungry for more and grateful for the reminder that a voice is a privilege. Set on an isolated island brothel off the coast of Bangladesh, it follows women bought and sold by Amma, a madam who was once trafficked herself, until Kusum Khan, a young woman with a history of street protest, arrives and refuses to accept her fate quietly.
What is remarkable in the story is that Anam makes us blame the system as a whole, rather than individuals. Shame and misogyny, upheld by society, keep the questions that might free women from ever being asked. Amma has never seen the women on the island as anything but property to be owned and used. Anam does not let her off the hook, but she does not flatten her into a monster either; that refusal to simplify is the book’s sharpest move.
Anam ensures that the book oscillates between the intimate and the collective lives of women. The uprising feels less like Kusum’s triumph and more like something the whole community builds together. The rising water and vanishing customers strain the island long before Kusum arrives, a quiet reminder that the women’s captivity and the island’s ecological collapse are the same story, told at different speeds.
Kusum’s rise feels inevitable but never convenient. I came away rooting for these women, moved less by their pain than by their total absence of self-pity.
Recommended for readers drawn to unflinching, politically urgent fiction, not a comfortable read, but a necessary one.
